Copyright Policy at Edgewood College: Course Readings

It is always acceptable to put books, videos, or other original material on reserve in the library for students to use there. See the Course Reserves page for policies and a submission form. Links to electronic items should be shared with your class via Blackboard, following the guidelines below.

Copyright Clearance

Copyright clearance is not needed for any items that are available in our library's subscription resources. Any other items will require copyright clearance.

Journal and periodical articles

Use links to full text articles in library databases whenever possible.

Photocopies should be made from the original publication and be legible. Include a complete citation on the first page:

• Only ONE article from a single issue of a journal
• Readings should be made from the original publication and be legible
• Periodical title
• Title of the article
• Author
• Volume, year and page numbers
• Publisher's copyright statement if available
• Copyright clearance is necessary for additional articles from the same issue

Book Chapters

Use links to e-books in the library catalog whenever possible.

Photocopies should be made from the original publication and be legible. Include a complete citation on the first page:

• Limited to ONE chapter from the book or not more than 10% of the original. To use more than one chapter, place the entire book on reserve.
• Title of book
• Title of chapter
• Author
• Publisher
• Year, edition
• Publisher's copyright statement; include copyright statement for images if separate

No part of any anthology may be placed on reserve. Librarians will be happy to help you find the original source to scan or link to.
