Book Cover: Inside of a DogThis month I’m reading Alexandra Horowitz’s earlier book, Inside of a Dog: What Dogs See, Smell, and Know.  An animal behaviorist, Horowitz presents the latest research in animal cognition, anatomy and behavior in an attempt to understand our canine companions. Dog lovers, take note. As grounded in science as her approach is, Horowitz makes no effort to disguise her genuine affection for the species. The result is an engaging and delightful book that will change the way you see dogs and our relationships with them.

Book cover: The Singing Life of BirdsAlthough it seems like spring will never quite get here, the birds are singing a little louder and more enthusiastically. Listening to them and wondering what messages their songs convey, I’ve also picked up Daniel Kroodsma’s The Singing Life of Birds for a second time.  Through a combination of personal nature narratives and step by step guidance, Kroodsma introduces his readers to the skill of identifying and understanding bird songs. If you've ever wondered what the robins are saying to each other these days or whose songs you've enjoyed as you walk across campus, The Singing Life of Birds likely has an answer for you!
