Using the Catalog

This module covers how to search the Oscar Rennenbohm Library's online catalog.

When you have completed this module of EMPOWER, you will be able to:

  • recognize that the catalog contains more than just books
  • find items using a variety of search strategies
  • identify a call number and locate items within the library

Call Numbers

The library at Edgewood organizes its collections by subject. These subjects are represented by a call number system called the Library of Congress Classification System (LC). LC uses call numbers that begin with letters.

If you were using the catalog to look for the book In Defense of Food: An Eater's Manifesto by Michael Pollan, you would find that the call number is RA784 .P643 2008 .

But what does this number mean?

RA The first section can be one to three letters. RA items are about health & medicine, specifically public aspects of medicine.
784 The second section describes the subject in more detail (in this case - nutrition)
.P643 The third section describes the author. The P stands for the author's last name (Pollan)
2008 The book was published in 2008
