A place to start your research

Sources for books:

Library Catalog (EdgeCat) to find books and other materials in the Edgewood Library.  Good for background information and overviews.  Reference books can be particularly helpful.

Do a Keyword Search directly from the Library home page with –click on Library Catalog in the navigation bar for full search options

  • Keyword searches will look for your search term in the subject, title and contents in the full record
  • Click on a title on your list and look at the Subject part of the bibliographic record.
  • Click on one of the subject headings.  By clicking on a subject heading, you will be able to find all other materials in the collection with that exact subject heading.
  • Record the subject headings for relevant books. 

Note:  If you do not find many books, try a more general subject heading: 

Exact subject: National Security – United States – History – Sources (1 title)

scroll up to: National Security – United States (26 titles)

  • Find a reference book for concise background information on your topic

Search by Keyword for your topic, then click Modify Search.  Limit to Reference:

  • Truncation – use the asterisk * to find terms with variations of the core word: medical, medicine, ethic, ethics, ethical, ethically, ecology, ecological, ecologist, ecologists, etc.
  • Review the list and select entries that you like by clicking on the “Mark” boxes to the left.  Then click on the Saved marked records box.
  • Click on View Saved (gray button on top).  In next window, click on Brief Display and enter your email address..

Books by and about people
If a book is by somebody, do an "author" search, and it's last name first, i.e. "Twain, Mark."
Conversely, if a book is about somebody, do a "subject search," and it's also last name first, i.e. "Twain, Mark."
