Music Theory

Musictheory.net is divided into three main content areas: Lessons, Trainers, and Utilities. Many aspects of basic music theory are covered in the Lessons section, and it includes sound. The Trainers section offers customizable drills in basic theory and aural skills, keyboard and guitar fret board pitch recognition, and basic brass instrument fingering and slide positioning. The Utilities section includes a printable staff paper generator, a chord calculator, and a 12-tone matrix generator.

teoria: Music Theory Web - Includes lessons in music theory and ear training with interactive exercises. Music theory lessons include: Reading Music, Intervals, Chords, Scales, Harmonic Functions. The Questions section includes questions and answers published at the web site in the past five years. An Articles section includes fascinating short articles on Analysis, Instruments, Music History and Music Theory. The site also includes an online reference service.

Digital Mozart Edition - A reproduction of the collected edition of Mozart's works (the Neue Mozart-Ausgabe) in a digitized format.

Digital Scores Collection - Scanned images of rare and unique musical scores, from Harvard University.

Historic American Sheet Music: 1850-1920 - A subset of the Library of Congress's American Memory, this collection contains images of 3,042 pieces owned by Duke University. Included are a wide range of song styles, but the site is particularly strong in Civil War songs and music. One feature is a time line presenting selected songs for each decade, along with political and social events of the time.

The Lester S. Levy Collection of Sheet Music - The Levy Collection of Sheet Music is part of Special Collections at the Milton S. Eisenhower Library of The Johns Hopkins University. It contains over 29,000 pieces of music and focuses on popular American music spanning the period 1780 to 1960. A special strength is music written during military conflicts, particularly the War of 1812 and World War I.

Music for the Nation: American Sheet Music - Containing over 100,000 pieces of historical sheet music, this archive is searchable by author, subject, and song title.

Popular American Music - Includes late 19th and early 20th century sheet music and recordings that are in the public domain as well as a subset of the UCLA Music Library's Archive of Popular Music, which covers the history of popular music in the US from 1790 to present.
