New CDs and music books
November 4, 2009
What do Frankie Yanokovic, Josh Berman, Bob Dylan, Fred Anderson, Miranda Lambert have in common? They are all represented in our latest batch of CDs or books about music. Highlights include the following:
- Potato Hole has the venerable Booker T. backed up by the Drive-By Truckers with none other than Neil Young on lead guitar. Play this one loud.
- Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix is sure to be on many critics' lists of best albums of 2009. Bright and very fresh sounding rock from the band, Phoenix.
- 21st Century Chase is an excellent jazz outing by Chicago's avant garde stalwart, Fred Anderson, who is now 80, believe it or not.
- Palm of Soul. Avant garde New Orleans jazz sage Kidd Jordan leads this session with the amazing Hamid Drake on drums and the equally amazing William Parker on bass.
- Revolution in the Air: the songs of Bob Dylan, 1957-1973 by Clinton Heylin. Mr. Heylin gives a song by song analysis of Dylan's output from this most fertile era of his career. Hours of reading pleasure of the Dylanologist.
- Equal Rights may be Peter Tosh's best record. Have you heard his "Stepping Razor"? If that doesn't get you dancing, nothing will.
