May 3, 2007

Death seems to be the theme of many of these new titles for our Relax & Read shelves, but each with a different twist.

Fiction

Heart-Shaped Box by Joe Hill
To any of us who have used EBay, this may come as no surprise, but Judas Coyne bought a ghost. He thought it was a hoax until the heart-shaped box arrived and the terror set in. Don't read this one when you are alone at night!

Brief History Of The Dead by Kevin Brockmeier
This creative young writer weaves two stories for us. One is about a woman at an Antarctic research station who sets off across the ice because she is running low on supplies and all of her contact with the remaining world has failed. The second story takes place in a city that is populated by people who have died but are still remembered by the living. A fascinating read.

You Suck by Christopher Moore
Moore has one of the most bizarre imaginations in print today. His recent hits of Fluke and Lamb only cement that statement. With this new book, he returns to the vampire couple from Bloodsucking Fiends to weave a most entertaining love story.

Non-Fiction

book cover

The Innocent Man by John Grisham
This is Grisham's first non-fiction book, and he has accomplished a shocking account of a man who was falsely accused of murder. The case against Ron Williamson was badly mishandled and led to him being wrongly found guilty and sent to death row. It is written with such drama that it is sometimes hard to remember you're reading non-fiction.

Freedom Writers Diary by the Freedom Writers
This is the chronicle of how a first-year high school teacher took a class of kids that no other teachers would accept, and turned them into college-bound successes. Focusing on racial tolerance and lack of motivation, these 150 students began recording and sharing their thoughts and feelings, turning themselves into Freedom Writers and turning themselves around.
